Regular roof maintenance is essential to ensure your roof remains in good condition. The condition of your roof naturally impacts its functionality and strength. Taking good care of your roof ensures that it is strong and durable, able to protect against storms and is unlikely to collapse. Looking after your roof could be lifesaving.
Long term disrepair, water and weather damage and neglect can cause roofs to buckle and break, leak or collapse. When roofs collapse, all those heavy roofing materials will undoubtedly fall inwards.
Roof collapses are incredibly dangerous and can result in the death/s of the occupants. It can and does happen. Collapses can cause injury, severe property damage or death.
The worse the roof is, the more likely it is to collapse. Hopefully, we’ve encouraged you to think about your roof and consider getting it inspected or having a look yourself at the very least. But what do you look for?
Here are a few signs that your roof needs immediate attention, either maintenance or a full restoration:
- Sagging Roof
A sagging roof is a big problem and requires immediate attention. This is not one of those “deal with it later” problems. A sagging roof means that something has gone wrong with the structural integrity of the roof or the supports. Roofing materials aren’t supposed to bend inward; they can only hold on for so long before they collapse.
- Missing or damaged roof tiles
This issue requires less immediate attention but still needs to be attended to. Missing or damaged roof tiles allow weather and pests into your roof or your home. This will cause a multitude of problems for you in time.
- Clogged gutters
Clogged gutters need to be unclogged regularly as water and debris will build up in the gutters and slowly lift roof tiles in your roof which will allow the water to sink in causing leaks and further lifting of tiles.
- Increased energy bills
A sudden increase in energy costs or noticeable difference in the temperature indoors, implies there is a problem with your insulation. This is another issue that needs to be resolved as soon as possible as cracked or worn insulation means that not only does cool or warm air seep out, but weather can also get in too.
- Damaged flashing
Flashing helps to direct water away from areas on your roof that may be slightly weaker like the area surrounding a skylight, for example. Without flashing water could pool there and eventually wear through the insulation causing a leak. Damaged flashing is the first step to leaks.
- Leaks and water stains
Leaks will likely be the first-time people really notice and think about their roof. Leaks are persistent and frustrating, there is quite literally a hole in your roof. Water stains are a sign of leaks in your roof too. They discolour your roof over time and could require extensive repairs depending on the severity of the damage.
